Conservation Edgewalkers (“we,” “us,” “our”) is committed to protecting the privacy of visitors to our website, users of ConEdge ID, and participants in our community. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
1. Scope
This policy covers:
- conservationedgewalkers.org (conedge.org), our main website;
- ConEdge ID, our unified account and login system for Edgewalkers, alumni, partners, Bulletin subscribers, and journal submission authors and reviewers;
- The information exchange between ConEdge ID and our first-party affiliated platforms, including content management systems for the Conservation Edgewalkers Bulletin and the Press of the Conservation Edgewalkers.
2. Information We Collect
- Account information (ConEdge ID): email address and a securely hashed password, stored in an industry-standard user system.
- Contact form and email submissions: name, email address, and any message content you send us.
- Bulletin subscription data: email address, and name if provided.
- Usage and technical data: IP address, browser type, device information, and log data collected automatically for security, fraud prevention, and rate-limiting purposes.
- Bot/human verification: when you sign up or log in, Cloudflare Turnstile runs a silent, non-interactive check to confirm you are a human user. This may involve Cloudflare processing limited technical data (such as IP address and browser signals) for verification purposes.
- Cookies: standard cookies used for site functionality and login sessions.
We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal data (e.g., financial, health, or government ID information) through this site.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Create, authenticate, and secure your ConEdge ID account;
- Provide access to Bulletin content, program materials, and community updates;
- Enable single sign-on to our journal platform for submission and review purposes;
- Respond to inquiries submitted via our Contact page;
- Detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, abuse, or suspicious account activity;
- Improve our website and communications.
4. Legal Basis and Consent
Where required by applicable law, we process your data based on your consent (e.g., subscribing to the Bulletin), our legitimate interests (e.g., site security, fraud prevention), or as necessary to provide the account services you request.
5. Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with:
- Cloudflare, for Turnstile bot/human verification during signup and login;
- Our affliated first-party platforms, to the extent necessary to enable single sign-on and to identify authorized submission of user data;
- Service providers who help us operate the website (e.g., hosting), under obligations of confidentiality;
- Authorities, if required by law, legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Conservation Edgewalkers or others.
We do not disclose personal information to third parties for unrelated marketing or commercial purposes.
6. Data Retention
We retain account and contact information for as long as your ConEdge ID account is active or as needed to fulfill the purposes described in this policy, unless a longer retention period is required by law. You may request deletion of your account at any time.
7. Data Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information against unauthorized access, loss, or misuse. We use Cloudflare Turnstile to silently verify human users and reduce automated abuse, and we apply rate limiting and monitoring to detect suspicious activity. Suspicious activity may result in temporary or permanent restriction of access. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, or to withdraw consent (e.g., unsubscribe from the Bulletin). To exercise these rights, use the ConEdge ID portal. Should the portal not contain the features you need, contact us using the details below.
9. Children’s Privacy
Our services are intended for students, researchers, and professionals and are not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
10. International Users
Conservation Edgewalkers works with an international community. By using our site or ConEdge ID, you understand your information may be processed in a country other than your own, subject to the protections described in this policy.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date above reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the site or ConEdge ID after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
12. Contact Us
